Not all families are ready to live independently; sometimes it takes more than one try to gain a stable foundation. Hilliard House provides that foundation through a caring and structured environment that allows families to mend and move forward at their own pace.
Before leaving Hilliard House in June of 2008, I had been residing here since December of 2005. This was my second time at Hilliard. I first left in 2004.
My second time at Hilliard was a long and uphill battle. I did not have permanent employment and was receiving assistance from Social Services. During my last stay, I was able to obtain permanent employment and self-sufficiency. The people that work here to help us were very helpful in preparing me for the outside world. And that goes for the Housing Case Manager, Child Services Coordinator, Financial Counselor, and all of the staff at Hilliard.
Today, I was able to turn the key to my own house and that was one of my ultimate goals. It was not without hard work, and dedication. I am thankful for all the assistance I was given by the staff and my fellow community members at Hilliard House. I hope this program stays in place for many years, or until no one else needs a homeless shelter.
My experience at Hilliard House began in January 2007 after a move to Richmond from South Carolina for my job and then losing my job due to "corporate downsizing". For me this was the most devastating life event I had ever experienced. Well educated, I had always had an excellent career path and two wonderful jobs that spanned over 25 years and never experienced a drinking problem. After my job loss, I entered an immediate and devastating depression. Along with my depression came the use of alcohol where I hoped the pain of loss would be healed. That was not the case.
After using my retirement and savings to further survive and having no living relatives and no friends willing to help me, I became homeless. I was accepted at Hilliard House about two months after living in CARITAS and in my car. At Hilliard House, I became active in AA and worked a strong recovery plan. I have been sober now for 18 months, employed and moving towards once again living independently. The Hilliard House staff has provided the support and guidance that I needed in my time of recovery. They have given me the opportunity to take advantage of all the services and programs available to me and they leave no stone unturned in creating a new start for women like me. Without this program, I don't think I would be ready to deal with life on life's terms.
My experience at Hilliard House has been a rewarding one. I have become more independent and I have learned a lot about trying to survive in the real world. The staff at Hilliard House has been great during my stay at Hilliard House. Now that I am about to leave I am getting very sad because this is an excellent place to live although considering the circumstances. I am glad that I have been offered an opportunity to participate in the Aftercare Program, so I will be able to function on the outside and not return to a shelter, becoming a stronger person with managing my finances and day-to-day living. My daughter and I are both grateful for Hilliard House. I hope that other women who come here will take advantage of this program and work it to the best of their ability.
When I first arrived at Hilliard House I was a little skeptical, nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time. I was also a little concerned to know that I would be living with at least 10 to 12 other women and their children. I was pleasantly surprised to know that I was one of the youngest residents and the residents, who had been in the program longer, welcomed me with open arms. During my first week at Hilliard House I learned about all the resources that were available to me and the programs that were provided for the children. For example the Read Aloud program that allowed me to spend time with my son in a safe and secured environment. To be able to have my own bathroom in my room was another great benefit. The staff has been wonderful and working with me to resolve my problems. I look forward to completing the program successfully, getting my GED, and going to college. Hopefully, someday inviting all of those that supported me during my stay at Hilliard House to my graduation and new home.
