Shelter Programs

Imagine having to flee your house with only the clothes on your back because of domestic violence. What would you do if you lost your job and were evicted? Would you know where to turn?

The effects of homelessness, poverty and family or community violence on our women and children instill a sense of hopelessness and poverty of spirit. Hilliard House is designed to address the needs of the whole person with community life, programming and an experienced, caring staff.

Life at Hilliard House is busy and rigorous. Each woman must share in the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning and the upkeep of the facility. The residents of Hilliard House participate in seminars on topics such as job training and education, communication and conflict resolution, and budgeting and money management. We partner with area organizations and skilled community volunteers to bring the workshops to the residents.

What we offer our residents:

  • Case Management - Women meet with the case manager for an initial needs assessment. Major goals for housing, employment, education, health, spirituality, community connections, and parenting/children are set in a Life Plan that is updated quarterly. Progress is assured by setting small, incremental steps that lead to goal completion.
  • House Meetings - Residents attend weekly meetings on house issues and general information.
  • Workshops on financial reorganization, health and nutrition, parenting, vocational planning, literacy education, substance abuse, and mental health counseling. Community resources and volunteers work together to provide services to address specific issues in these areas.
  • Children are an important part of our community. A Children's Services Coordinator makes sure children are registered in school or day care immediately. She coordinates services with doctors, schools, special needs assessments or special activities. This important service helps moms with parenting concerns or issues.
