Tax Credits

***Unfortunately, Hilliard House will not have NAP Credits again until July 01, 2010****

In today's world, we are all looking for ways to make our dollars go further. Hilliard House is able to stretch dollars and offer donors significant tax savings through the use of Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) Tax Credits on your Virginia income tax return.

Tax credits are available to individuals and married couples that make cash donations directly to approved NAP organizations. Hilliard House is one such organization because we serve economically deprived households and were awarded NAP credits by the Virginia Department of Social services. The minimum donation by an individual or married couple must be at least $500. The value of the tax credit is equal to 40% of the donation.

Example: Minimum - $500 cash donation X .40 = $200 tax credit. Therefore, your $500 donation will only cost you $300 when you take advantage of the NAP tax credit.

NAP credits are also available to businesses contributing directly to an approved NAP organization. In addition to cash donations, business contributions may be in the form of goods, stock, real estate, professional services, contracting services and rent or lease of the participating nonprofits' facilities. All of these donations are eligible for a state tax credit of 40% of the total contribution. Tax credits may be available to a business making a donation of at least $1,000, but not more than $437,500.

Please note that this is a tax credit, not a tax deduction. There is a dollar-for-dollar write off of the donor's Virginia tax liability. If you make a NAP eligible donation to Hilliard House, you can benefit from the NAP credit almost immediately when you prepare your Virginia tax return. The donation will not affect your federal tax liability. This is a great way to make your money work two ways; helping Hilliard House and keeping more money in your pocket!
